A Down Under

99 comments:

  1. T Minus 4 days and I learn I might have (get?) to go to Singapore on my way to Australia on somewhat of a peace making mission. I can do that. I would love to do that. But there's that ambivalence with leaving my family again.... I have to leave 2 days earlier and miss out on extra time with my brother who is coming back state side after a heroic and tumultuous 10 years serving our country.

The day begins with a list - to keep everything in order.

  2. What a lovely time of year to go to Australia! Seven weeks away from family? gah! I know your kids are the sun and the moon for you. I can't even get my job to let me go to a one day conference, though... feast or famine, huh? I will keep you all in thoughts and prayers!

  3. We had a family date last night- movies (Tooth Fairy - the men saw Sherlock Holmes which is where I wish I had been) and to the book store.

Ah- today I am trying to transfer knowledge about: bills, payment and income schedules, nanny fees/what to expect, Friday folders.... wow. It's overwhelming. I can't imagine being on the receiving end.

I also want to visit my wonderful and beloved Aunt Marge and look forward to chatting with my brother.

And for some reason, I've torn into the closet under the stairs.

Taking on too much! It's the name of the game....

I've started collecting all my important documents and 'gadget cords' for charging of Kindle, iPod, etc. All this connectivity will keep me sane!

Thanks for thoughts B, Karen and Eva... can't wait to post the first pictures! I am quasi excited.

  4. Well, slight change of plans. I am leaving for a 4 day trip to Singapore at 8:30 am.

Should be interesting... I'll check in on the other side of the world.

  6. The goodbye was not as bad as I thought, I think because we've been talking about it for so long. We said goodbye and repeated all the reasons we'll miss one another and why we love one another at home- in comfort rather than at the airport in the van (in the snow). I think that helped.

I just called from LAX and they are doing GREAT. Playing in the snow... Tyson is taking them to get their check ups (mainly for Eden to begin GOTR) - they have played with neighbors (Deb, you are great) and seem to be just fine.

I happen to be in LAX in the First Class Club (because Biz. class was sold out) A couple of Singha beers and I'm relaxed - ready for 12 hours to Tokyo.

  7. Have a wonderful trip ... Just dont plan on getting too much work done in OZ or you will be sorely disappointed. Singapore Airlines is da BOMB - great service. Enjoy the lounge in Changi Airport (S'pore) on your way out. I didnt want to leave :)

All the best and stay in touch ... Peace out!

  9. Hello:

I am in Singapore! The flight was incredible. 1st Class on 1st Class airline is the best! I'm spoiled..... I arrived about 6 hours ago. Made it to the hotel with no issue, grabbed a sea bass meal and slept well for about 4 hours.

My first meetings are in about 3 hours.

I will have a chance to post some pictures today, I hope.

  10. My most exciting news is that Sat. night, I get to partake in the Chinese New Year celebration.... fireworks and parades and dragons, etc.

Meetings went great. I have a huge document to write this evening but, it's 1 am CST and I'm fizzling out. So, back to the hotel I go for some shut eye to wake and write write write.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I have my document completed. +/-18 pages of current state, outstanding tasks, lessons learned, etc. It's being reviewed by the team back home since I did make several changes to the agreed upon process based on findings here on site.

I have a couple of more meetings this afternoon and one with our State side vendor at 12:00 am tonight. Other than those, I am done with my work in Singapore. It was fruitful and I hope my colleagues here agree.

I was able to take a 3k +/- jog this morning, albeit on the treadmill. It seemed easier here than home likely because I don't have other things on my mind that are callig me away from the mat or treadmill. At any rate, I will be having dinner with the Singapore team on the river tonight. Tomorrow, I will do the tourism... to Sentosa Beach in the afternoon and to watch the Chinese New Year fireworks at night. Sunday- perhaps some shopping but more likely, resting and preparing for the trip to AU.

Today, in Singapore,is my 16th wedding anniversary. I am one lucky person.

I miss my kids. I spoke with them today and they are doing very very well. Hats off to Tyson, Brittany, my brother and our entire support family.

    MWAH-

  14. Today is dedicated to me and Singapore! I have had my new favorite breakfast (Muesli) and coffee and am ready to head out.

First, to Millenia Walk to pay the Chinese man. Yesterday, I decided on buying some Chinese paper cutting art. I have S$140.00 picked out and went to pay but he doesn't take a credit card. The man is returning to Shanghi for the Chinese New Year tomorrow (today) at 3:00. I asked him to hold them for me as, by that time, I had myself so excited with what I had chosen, I didn't want someone else to get them. He smiled and handed me the bag. I knew well enough not to refuse his generosity. So today, hell or high water, I go back there to pay the kind man.

Then, I am visiting the Botanical Garden, The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple/Museum, teh fountain of wealth (remember my new goal is to all I am now, only RICH!), City Art Gallery and perhaps the Art Musesum although most art is lost on me.

I have reservations on the river at Indo Chine (Vietnemese) at 8:00 where I'll watch the young frolic and celebrate the new year.

I hope to get many photos to share with you all.

I am here now. It was a very long trip and it is VERY HOT HERE! you know how I hate being hot? Well, I'm very hate and so, I'm not enjoying myself too much. we have a lot of work to do today. It's 9:30 am on Tuesday here and it's 5:36 pm on Monday in St. Louis.

We are WORLDs apart right now and I feel so sad. I miss you and Isaac and Abbi and Daddy so much - beyond words. But when I close my eyes, I see your smile and I here your laugh and I feel your hugs.

It's the only way I get through the day.

  27. AU is not treating me very well so far. My heart is so heavy over missing my family - my husband and kids - my mom, brother, friends... my BED. I have a serious case of home sickness. I suppose it will pass - this is the worst part of it.

It's HOT - imagine the most humid day of the year in St. Louis - then suck more air out of the water that hangs around and call it AU. It's better now but it's been so bad that I can't jog for getting cramps and pangs in my legs.

The food is awful, too. Everything tastes like fish.

We have had our share of zingers on the project too and I've really had to be stronger (iykwim) than I like.

I want to go sit in a movie theatre tonight. I need to veg out. I'm not sleeping for being wound up and hungry... I just need to chill. We will be working until 8 or so (14 hours today) so, I'm not sure I'll get to, but I do want to see a movie.

  28. Hi Sis!

I've heard Aussie food sucks, you just confirmed it. I'm sorry you are homesick :( I can tell you there are very few things that help people get through that except time and an understanding that it is necessary.

I was planning on stopping to see the kids today already, and Eden is supposed to call me next time Isaac goes to Karate so I can surprise him up there. Of course, the kids probably read this so there goes the surprise hahaha.

Ange, I love you and miss you also, but it will be ok. Try to look for the good things, the things you'll never see in the US that you can see while you are there...even some stupid rocks or something...that always helped me while I was in Iraq.

  29. Hi Angie,

I'm so sorry to hear that the food there sucks and you are working so much. Eden called tonight to let me know they are coming to Annika's party this weekend. I am so excited. I'll give them lots of love and talk to Tyson about when the kids can come visit for a weekend.

  31. Things are looking up.

I found a sweet little beach on the other side of the Brisbane River. It's about a 2 miles from my hotel. I walked the river late last night and it felt like home to me. Not sure if it's the Mississippi calling or the Spoon calling. Either way, my family can attest that rivers call me and sooth me.

The weather has broken as well. I fully intend to run to the beach and along the river today. The sky is clear and I've gotten my belly full and had some good laughs with the team.

We've made some leaps in the project as well and it appears that we've regained the time we lost. That is fantastic news.

Looks like I'll be taking a short break from AU and heading back to Singapore for 4-5 days the first part of March. Word is, I get to take the harbor flight from NewCastle to Sydney - Tyson, kids - this means a sea plane. If I take that route (which will likely scare the crap out of me) I'll take tons of photos.

And finally but most importantly, I have had many chances to speak with the kids and Tyson. They are weepy - which makes me weepy, but all in all they are doing well, I think.

Becky, mom, Danny - thanks for snuggling with them. They miss that most, I thik.

Ok - back to the grind. If/when I get to the beach/river in day light, I'll snap some shots and share.

    Love,

  37. Fast Nacht, Lenten meal, Council meeting are all done! Should be an easier week for me, how about you? Annika's party was nice, Danny had a great time with the kids! I asked Tyson about the kids spending the night next Sat. He said they will be at Karina's Fri night so we decided to spread it out a little....but I think they are coming for a while next Sat. afternoon. Did you get to do some sight-seeing?

The web sight Danny has been going to to check job openings had 2 for Scott ABF on Thurs. and 1 in St.Louis on Fri. He said he has never seen either location posted before. He e-mailed a resume to all of them. Keeping my fingers crossed! He has not been accepted yet or signed any contract with the first one.

  38. GREAT weekend. I have some photos posted above. The first one is from the Gold Coast - Surfers Paradise. It's South of Brisbane and is likened to Miami. Having been to both, I get it, but Miami is much bigger and not nearly as pretty. The water (being Pacific) is much clearer and bluer than the Atlantic but warmer than our Pacific water in CA. I think it looks more like Malibu. At any rate, it was lovely.

There is a picture of a street performer playing Aborignial music from a digideroo. They have some freak ability to blow out through the insturment while breathing in to -"retool" and make more sounds. Then, they stop occasionally and throw in an animal sound. This guy was cool- drinking Gloria Jean coffee, playing the Digideroo dressed like he's in with his tribe.

There is a picture of took of the city of Brisbane. It's truly lovely. It's a University town - so very young and thrving. The photo of the city was taken from the Southbank, which is about 2 miles from the office/hotel. It's a great walk, jog. Then the last photo is the picture of the Southbank, which is a man made beach. It's like a pool in the US where the water is chlorinated, but it has the sloped entry with sand and trees all around giving the beach feel. It overlooks the Brisbane River. I read there for 5 hours yesterday. It was lovely. It is great for kids too because the oceans have so many dangerous animals that parents take their kids to these beaches so they can actually relax.

The project looks to be back on track - so, will be working all night tonight and with any luck, we'll be taking off from Brisbane Thursday am.

Danny- hope you get a local job.

Mom - glad the lent events went well.

Becky- the kids had a good time with Annika's birthday.

    Eden - check your email

    Isaac - miss your smile

Abbi - you are my sunshine

Tyson - god I wish you were here.

    All my love

  39. Hey Lucy,

Been thinking about you lots this weekend, even before I saw the beach photo on FB. Wow.

It all, meaning the work, the travel, just eating, sounds very complicated to me.

It was a rainy day here yesterday; had it been cooler, we'd be having a snow week! Work is busy, busy...Next Sunday is my girl's 10th birthday. Easy celebration this year -- all she wanted was a sleepover at the lake for 2 girlfriends. I'm planning a scavenger hunt in the woods. I think they just want to giggle and be left alone...

Miss you and think of you very often - Love you,

  40. Angie,

Just popping in to say HI! Hope everything is going well for you. The pictures are beautiful. Is it still hot there? Geese are flying.....maybe that's a good sign that warmer weather is coming!!! Dad is leaving Sat. for Minn. to test welders next week. It will be a very long drive for him. I hope the roads aren't bad up that way.

    Love ya,

  41. Mom-

It's still hot, yes. Funny you said, "Popping in" as that's a very AUSSIE thing to say. Just 'pop over' or 'pop in to have a look' Funny. Very nice people here. Very patient and happy.

The weather is still VERY hot. It's like home in the dog days of August. The sun doesn't feel as hot but I'm not without shade mostly. The hotel opens to the steet level with an outdoor mall area. There are down escalators where shops and food courts are underground. It's laid out very nicely. Most of the construction was under - businesses are up - on the group but shops and food courts, etc. are underground. There are open parts of the ceiling though to let light (and birds) in. Pretty neat.

The project isn't going any better today than yesterday AND we have no accomodations past Thurs. AC/DC is coming to town for the first time in 20 years and the whole place is sold out. That might be the catalyst that drives us out of this town and on to the next - leaving the work here undone.

Music is a mover for sure!

I've been video Skyping with the family and it's a blessing!!! Technology drives me away from family and turns out to bring us back together. Interesting huh?

I'm headed back to Singapore on the 28th - the 4th and will rejoin the team in Syndey to carry on. I hope that brings a break in the length of the trip. When I get back, I'll start counting down the days.

But not until then. It's too far out.

Also, it seems like people are mistaking the photos taken this weekend as Angela's having fun.... well, I did on those two days. But two out of 15 is a bad average.

Tell Dad to be safe on his travels and I want to talk to him about his patent when I get back.

    LOL

    All smiles, all smiles.

Ethel, love you- thanks for notes and tell your beautiful daughter happy happy terrific 10!

  43. Really quick update: drove 4.5 hours from the airport to the mine site. 2+ were on gravel roads. We saw BEAUTFUL country - vineyards (YEAH SHIRAZ) and exactly ZERO roos. Many iguanas and hawks, etc.

We finally left site at 9:30 and made it to the hotel around 10:30 and went to 'town' (being about 2k people) for dinner. They volunteered me to run into the pub to see if they were serving.

So, here I go... jeans, steel toes and St. Louis Blues shirt, "are you still serving?"

The whole of of men turn to look and the expression says, "Who's the American Girl?"

NOTE TO SELF: don't do that again.

    We had yummy Indian.

The first sounds of the town you might ask? Awful rendition of Bon Jovi, "Living on a Prayer" No joke.

Off to buy groceries for the long day ahead.

    Love to you all

I snuggled and loved on I, E, and A last weekend at Becky's. It was a great visit other than your absence. We missed you!

I am busy getting my class ready for the stupid ISAT tests next week. Can't wait to get them over!

I will try to keep a better eye on your blog. I am so jealous of the warmth. Winter is hanging on strong here. YUCK!

  45. ROOS SIGHTINGS!! ROO SIGHTINGS!! PARROT SIGHTING AND EMU SIGHTINGS!

Photos to follow - on the drive from the mine to the hotel, I snapped photos of those animals. What an amazing place. Thanks to my wonderful husband for outfitting me with such outstanding photography tools.

The project went so so so well yesterday. We cut over Wilpinjong to the new domain and migrated mail in less than 1 hour. Today, we are back on site to implement L3 on the LAN and deploy NAC.

We had dinner at the hotel last night and cackled so loud that each of our bellies hurt.

We made the table next over cackle as well... just because we were so giddy.

Now, if I can get a run in this afternoon, all will be well.

Tomorrow, I board a plane called the Mudgee Express en route to Sydney where I'll be over night. Then, on a plane back to Singapore.

Mudgee Express... ? Is this really my life??

I'm so glad things are going well....quite an experience for you, too! I called Tyson this morning to see about the kids coming over but the girls are going shopping with Karina and he & Isaac were getting hair cuts, then maybe to see the new nephew, or is it niece? I told him to call if he needed some help. It sounds like all is going good for him. I'll plan to have them spend the night this coming weekend. They would probably like Bub to be here when they stay over.

Dad is off to MN. Danny rented a car and drove to Galesburg, then going to Mahomet on Mon. I'm sure you read this on facebook already. Boy, is the house quiet! I'm always kinda ho hum the day Dad leaves but I cut my hair this morning and have other things to do later.

  50. Angie,

Where are you now?!! Abbi & Isaac were here for a couple of hours Sunday afternoon while Tyson & Eden went to Target. They took a motorcycle ride to Spindler Park too. Said it was VERY cold. We went to Merwin Park for a short time. Abbi played with a girl & 2 boys, Isaac stayed in the car with a game. He didn't want to go but I wouldn't let him stay at our house by himself. I shortened that pair of pants for Eden and cuddled with Abbi & Isaac! I didn't know Margie broke her foot. Hope she gets along O.K. with it.

Is the job still going good? How often do you get to talk to the kids? They seemed to be fine on Sunday! They might sleep over Fri. or Sat. night.

  51. Hey Mom-

I am back in Singapore - fine by me. I love it here. I got here on Monday afternoon and I leave already on Thursday morning. I don't want to jinx myself but as of now, both projects (Singapre and AU are going well). We are going to have to work like bats out of hell to get done in the time we planned - we lost a lot at our first stop in AU but we intended to keep at at.

Marjorie broke her foot on the ice. She fell not long ago too and I think her back wasn't fixed yet either... bruised up for sure.

I get to talk to the kids almost every day and we're Skyping - which means we see eachother on line like a video. They seem like they are doing GREAT and I thank Tyson for that. They were weepy for the first 1 or 1.5 weeks but always seem rested and happy when we talk. Makes things so much easier.

    Did dad get to MN?

    Love you and miss you!

    Angie

(PS: thanks for helping with the kids. I know they've been wanting to start going to your house more often!)

  53. Angie,

I'll bet Singapore is beautiful! Is the food better there?

Dad got to MN about noon Sun. He had a hard time finding a motel though, everyting was full. He was on a waiting list at 4 motels. They had basketball tournaments going on. He got a call from Best Western mid-afternoon so that's where he's staying. As of this morning he had not started testing welders because the material wasn't there yet. He's testing 6 guys and said it will probably take 3 days. I don't know for sure when he will drive back home but he can't make the trip in one day.

The ELF's have the meal before Lenten service tomorrow night, more cooking! We're using leftover ham from FastNacht to make ham & beans. Five of us are making h & b, some are making cornbread & dessert. I got 14 bags of slaw and dressing. My car will be full of groceries again when I go to church tomorrow at 4:30. We are scheduled to have the Bingo lunch stand on Mar 13 too! We may see if the church youth group wants it. We'll discuss it at the meeting after church tomorrow night. It's always the same ones that end up bringing food & working there too. I'd be in favor of letting them use more leftover ham!! It's almost been too much lately! Election of officers is at the April meeting, thank goodness. 2 years as president is enough for me.

Danny had a good time at Cindy's. They went to the Quad Cities to a casino Sat. night and he won more than $500. Sunday they visited with Bill & Nancy. Monday he drove around Williamsfield and visited with Lee & Connie before he drove to Mahomet. He'll probably be home before noon tomorrow.

I hope the rest of your project goes as scheduled. Sure don't want you to be gone longer than planned!

    Love & miss you too,
    Mom

  56. Since Thursday, I've had the pleasure of being in Singapore, Sydney and now, the breath-taking Wollongong, AU. I've come to realize that normally, the most surprising things are those that aren't expected, and that's the truth for my current location. Wollongong is a coastal town with Mount Ousley in the background. Mt. Ousley is about 460 metres high. The fog was hiding the peaks this morning and the waves crashed - surfers were out at 8 am.

On site today, the sounds were something from a movie - parrots and cocktiels could be seen and the air was of sweet sage. I would like to just sit and look - just to see what else was hiding in the forest. Amazing place.

I got to Skype with my family today. They never cease to amaze me. Happy, sprite eyes and never short on comedy, I miss them so much and can't wait to hear their giggles up close and personal.

Project is trekking along nicely. Hopefully, we'll be done on time.

Bridget, thanks for the notes. Keep me smiling.

    Love,

  60. We're on site today and the support is going very well.... few incidents and about 90% completion at this point. In between conversions and migrations, I'm updating this. I hope it doesn't seem too broken.

Yesterday was amazing. After we left site, we drove back to the hotel a different route. The photos are from Cliffton, a very small mining town, on the cliffs over looking the ocean. The thought of selling my home, taking the profits and my family and moving here to work in a bakery or surf shop, became very strong. I mean, look at this place. No tourism... Leo, our local support says, "it's just road, not unlike many others."

I do wonder how I got I stuck in St. Louis, MO after seeing all the beautiful places I've seen. I've recently realized that I've seen so many fabulous places, domestically and internationally. In the US, my favorites are New Mexico (between Lee Ranch and Albuquerque) Breckenridge, Charleston, SC and the 1 in CA/Big Sur. Internationally, the Swedish Coastline, the Cayman Isles, Tulum, MX give AU a run for the money. But, the quaint, close knit, laid back and quaint nature of these magical little spots in AU take the cake.

Eden, to answer your question, I do not think I've lost wait (weight). I'm eating so much restaurant food sweetie, that it will be hard. I'm jogging though. I ran more than 5k yesterday and it felt really good. How is GOTR? Are you enjoying it?

As of today, it looks like we have 25 more days until we're done.

I can't WAIT to be in the comfort of my quaint, close knit home. I will try to bring the 'best' of these places back with me and work them into my daily life... laid back being the first!

  61. Hi Babe!

I hope that you have the time of your life right now. I know that being away from your family that long can be hard, especially for the kids but just relax and enjoy the moment. Time runs on a fast track sometime and before you know it you'll be back home again.

Beatiful pictures though. We have the this Australian guy working here so I had to show him the photos. His eyes took on a somewhat dreamy look, seeing his native country again.

Take care and live the moment

  62. Angie,
I can see why you hate to leave there, looks beautiful!! I just got home from taking the kids to school. They each got BIG HUGS from Grandma when they got up. They are so easy to get ready in the morning.

I took some chili to them yesterday afternoon. They all liked it a lot, even though there were onions in it!

Dad got home from MN Friday morning and left yesterday morning for Schererville, IN near Gary. He'll be working there for 6 weeks or so. I'm sure he'll be able to come home for a weekend or 2.

Danny has met a girl from Russia. She's a waitress at the casino downtown. I'll let him fill you in on the rest. They've had 1 date but are calling and texting each other a lot!

Danny accepted the contract job for Iraq and they approved him too. They don't have a position available right now so he may be here until May. Of course I'm not thrilled about it but he has not heard anything from Scott AFB.

Have you started the count down for your return? This is surely an experience you won't forget! Everyone is fine here. Abbi had a little bit of a scratchy throat this morning but really seemed fine otherwise. Hope you are fine too.

    Love & miss you,
    Mom

  63. I'm fine - feeling like I got into a car wreck which can only mean 1 of a couple of things: the 4 mile jog I took overdid it, the mattress at the old Novotel isn't so good or I am getting sick.

    I hope it's the 1st.

Thanks for loving on the kids mom. They need that motherly touch (as I'm sure they are getting plenty of fatherly love!)

Glad Danny will be around until at least May - Danny, we have some hanging out to do!

    Love you-

  64. We have made it to the next stop after 4.5 hours of mountain driving (hung over no less). I am staying in a town named Singleton, NSW, AU. It's in the Hunter Valley, nestled bewteen 2 mountain ranges. The weather is chillier than on the coast for sure and we're moving into Fall here in AU. I have on a long sleeved shirt under my T-shirt. The name of the hotel, Mid-City Motor Inn. Interesting place with Pokey (slots and poker machines) in almost every pub and off track betting on horses and grey hounds. Lots of people in those pubs betting in the middle of the workday. Lots of beers being drunk.

This is 100% a mining community with 4 mines in the local area. It's the way of life and is what produced the surrounding towns. The only industry, although being in the valley, i did take note of some ranches with sheep and cattle. Little produce that I saw.

Can I just say that I am COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS. I want time to fly. I want to be home. I want to be with my kids and husband and mom and brother and neighbors and my fluppy wuppy puppy dog.

I am tired and I miss home.

I will post photos when I see something to take a picture of. The town itself is old western looking and is worthy of photos... so, I'll do that when possible.

Glad spring has sprung for you all. Look forward to enjoying it with you back home soon.

    Love,

She is 21" long and weighed 9#8oz and has lots of black hair (for now). Mom is sore (cesarean) and baby is hungry (naturally).
Sounds like the excitement of new places is wearing off for you some. Just so you know, you're missed too.

  75. Eden - I miss my cooking too. All this restaurant food is making me FAT! UGH. When I get home, we are going to go shopping at a place called Dow - all the food there is 100% natural. No chemicals on the fruit and veggies and the meat doesn't have any bad stuff in it either. The people in AU eat a lot better than we do because they have so many fresh fruits here. It's warm so much that they can grow the veggies and fruits all year round. The people here are much thinner than we are too and I think that's why. They eat natural stuff.

I have some new recipes to try. Yesterday, I had this salad. It had skinny Chinese noodles in it, cucumbers, carrots and chicken. Then, it had mint leaves in it and the dressing was very light peanut and lemony. It was goooooood.

Did your teacher already have her baby? Brett is a good name. What will its name be if it's a girl?

Abbi was crazy huh? She normally is! Crazy girl. You are too though. You get that from your daddy ;)

When i get home and I'm off for that whole week, we are going to do FUN STUFF. We can go to the Rec Center and we can go skating (ice skating too) and we are going to go shopping for spring clothes and we are going to see Camron and Amy and the new baby and we're going to get our new furniture too.

Then, we are going to go to the Nickolodean resort in FL this fall. Doesn't that sound good? AND if we're lucky, we'll go back to Big Cedar too. So many things to do!

I'm not sure if I'll be home early at all. We messed up the project a couple of times and had to start over... so, if I get home on time that will be a miracle.

You know, Easter is coming too. Wow! So many things to be excited about.

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH and am getting excited to come home and see you and Isaac and Abbi and Daddy and ODIE and meow and grover and Grandma and Grandpa AND Uncle Bub and Aunt Marge and Tonya and Dorothy .... and wow. The list goes on and on and on.

I think I'm just going to bring your gifts home because it's very expensive to ship them and they would get there a couple of days before me. So, it doesn't seem like a good way to spend our money.

I got your messages at my yahoo email too. I'll send you a private note there, ok?

    I LOVE YOU

  76. Hey sis!

I'm so glad the countdown is on! Can't wait for you to be back. I'm so sorry the kids, Tyson, and you had to deal with the flu. YUCK! I'm sure it was tough for you to be away. But it sounds like they all bounced back. I have to admit the conversations between you and Eden make me sniffle. It's so sweet that she misses your cooking. She's just precious! And you trying to blame their craziness on their daddy - chuckles! Hang in there! Love you!

    C

    ReplyDelete
  77. Oh my, I am in total agreement with Cindy. The notes from Eden are just priceless. The love pours out over and over. The ONLY way they get their crazyness from Tyson would be because you are still crazy and he is not. I love the pictures and notes, but I want to see the real pictures when you are home. I'm sure you do miss your cooking. Eating out would get old in about a week.
When Tim was in Iraq I always thought that although it was very hard on me, it was harder on him as the one being away. The countdown is on and very soon you'll be home being smothered with kisses from your kiddos. Hang in there, Love you! Becky

  78. Ditto about the messages from Eden! How sweet is she?!! Isaac & Eden were REALLY good Friday night but I felt soo bad that Abbi couldn't stay. I called Tyson about 8:30 that night and he said she was having a really hard time as he was I'm sure. He's quite the Daddy. I'm glad it didn't last much longer than 12 hrs.!!

I'm sure the trip has been great but I'll be so glad when you're back too! We may have all family members in the states for a short

  80. 15 DAYS LEFT!!!! 15 DAYS LEFT!!!! 15 DAYS LEFT!!!!!

We leave Brisbane in the morning and head up North (which is closer to the equator so hotter than where we are now) for the last leg of the trip. If all goes well (and I say that confidently) I'll leave on Apr. 1st - which is the day we originally planned to be done. Amazing with all the successes and failures and successes that it will work out as we planned.

We are taking 2 days off next week - we originally planned to have them in Sydney, but instead, since we'll be north, we are going to Mackay. The hope is we'll get to snorkel or at least frolic in the water where the Great Barrier Reef begins. However, a cylcone has just swept through FIJI and is expected to hit our vacation spot about the same time we'll be there. Great.

Cindy, Becky, Mom - thanks for the wonderful and heartfelt comments. I knew this blog would be a good idea. It's really helped me and the kids too.

Right now, I'm still working with Singapore but in AU. It should be finsihed up entirely by 4 am your time, 7 pm our time.

Can't wait until your time is also my time.

    Love you all-

  83. I lost a very eloquent post because (in my own ignorance) I had an IP conflict between my broadband and 802.1x connectivity.... so, I won't try to recreate it. But, an update is: I am in Moranbah, QLD. It's about 2.5 hours off the Mackay coast and about 2 days from the Cat 4 cyclone Ului hitting land fall. My main concern is the path we travel to the mine will turn to quick sand and we won't get out if we are there when it starts or get in if we're in the hotel when it hits.

I came very close to some roos yesterday. Through my lens, I saw the male stare at me and tilt his ears back - my indication to walk away, backwards, very slowly.

The outback is amazing - dry, red, brunt and dead roos on the side of the path - crusted and decapitated in one case.

13 days until I come home.

    Thank God.

    Love

  90. The storm went back up to a CAT 3 before hitting the coast off Mackay. It hit here around 4 am. VERY windy and tons of rain, but the little hotel I'm in is brick and I felt very safe.

There will be no traveling to the mines today and our next couple days are in flux. Looks like no barrier reef trip for us. The coast is torn up and the little Island we were going to cruise to is on lock down. Not sure if it's worth a try to a rain forest further in land or if we just scratch this, finish up and spend extra time on the NAC nut... good thing I can go with the flow and not worry about 'what's next' too much.

As for today, trapped in a 1980s hotel room that doesn't serve food on Sundays - no wheels. Looks like chashews and arnot crackers for me today!

  91. Anfie,

So glad to hear you're O.K., that the storm has passed and you have some down time....in a small motel with no food!!! Does it have T.V.?! Got a good book with you? What's the count down now? I checked in with Tyson late this afternoon to see how the kids were and what he had heard from you. Sure HOPE this doesn't delay your return.

All is well here. It's supposed to be cold with lots of rain tomorrow but at least no snow. Lee Summit, KS (where dad's first cardiologist's office is) has 7.5 inches of the fluffy white stuff!

Danny is keeping the road hot between here and St.Louis. I should(?) see him sometime tomorrow.

Very relieved to hear you are safe!

    Love & miss you,

  93. I am good. We drove away from the small town and just left a message that we had to check out as no one was manning the hotel. We drove to Mackay which is about 30 miles South of the eye. It was devastated. Yachts broken up, Figi was on the Mackay shore line, no power. The hotel we moved to was WORSE than the one we left. Three times through the night, someone tapped on my bahtroom window. Five very crisp taps. I thought to myself, "I think someone thinks someone ELSE is in here.... and I don't want what they have to offer."

It was a terrible night. We got to Dalby around 1 today and are checked into the Motor City Hotel Motel Hoey Moey. It has cincer block walls and is attached to a drive through liquer store. The bar ownders (Pam and Dave) are nice and have 2 puppies, Snowy and Ralphie (fans of A Christmas Story perhaps?) The puppies made me miss home so badly. Ralphie and I had a good toss fetch game. He's a beautfiul border collie and snowy is some Italian sheep dog. HUGE and off white.

We are on site now. No day off since Feb. 19th still. I'm getting crabby and cranky and ate my lunch alone today just a couple table over from the boys... they are on my nerves.

    A

    ReplyDelete
  94. Sounds like you've been having it pretty rough lately. I'm very happy you didn't see who was tapping on your window!! You haven't had a day off since Feb.19? Hang in there, the end is in sight!

The kids had fun yesterday. It was such a cold, rainy day, Danny was in St. Louis so I decided to take them bowling. They all did really well the first game. Abbi bowled 98, Eden 100 and Isaac 127. Isaac beat me!! He does really well and doesn't use the 'bumpers' much.

I had fixed a big pot of chicken & dumplings early in the afternoon so supper was ready when we got back from bowling. Tyson came over about 5:30. I think they all enjoyed the meal!! I sent some home with them too.

It's cloudy and yucky again today but should reach near 60.

    See you soon!

    Love ya,
    Mom
